Anatomy of a Christian Argument for God
This is a recent comment I got at another blog I started for fun called, “italktogod.wordpress.com”. There are some great replies that come through there – this one was epic in length so I thought I’d comment in bold and bright blue about some of it. The other blue – navy blue is what I said in my original post that he is quoting. This comes from an email address with suffix, co.za – is that Zaire, Africa? Not sure, will need to look that up. Zimbabwe? Africans should be in my camp about god – if there are still believers in a good god there, I’d fall down comatose.
First, let me state that the story about creation in the bible has profound flaws… many Christians themselves state that it is not meant to be taken literally and scientifically. This commenter believes the story from Genesis – so I disagree with various points of the story that just don’t make sense at all to any rational minded person on the face of the earth if they allow themselves to be honest and question it.

So now it is Gods fault that we made a mess of things?
Let us remind ourselves of a few things first: It was Adam and Eve that sinned, not God.
(The concept of sin – of doing something against what god wanted, calling it sin and making it a bad thing – came FROM god if you’re to understand it all correctly. Is that right? It must be right. God made the game. God set up ALL rules to the game, not just the ones you want to look at. You need to see the big picture, not just man’s role in the game after the rules were set up. God made us too yes? God must have made us with the proclivity to choose sin over obedience – yes? Why are we wrong for that?)
Like everything else, there are consequences. The consequence was that we the humans lost the dominion over this world and we handed it over to satan (the bible so rightly mentioned the god of this world)
(OK, now we’re getting somewhere I think… there must be an evil force in charge of this world. Because otherwise a good god doesn’t make sense.)
Now lets try and figure this one out. Satan and all his fallen angels got dominion over this world, but it is Gods fault that we gave the dominion away?
(As I said, he made the rules – all the rules.)
So we actually don’t have any personal responsibility in this whole matter.
Exactly correct.
God gave us free will, so that we can choose between good and evil.
(but, on that day in whatever the environment was… the curiosity that he GAVE us in our minds as an construct of mind – this wanting to know about things – this eagerness to explore the unknown… was more powerful as an influence. They chose to explore, not knowing it meant eternal damnation for the entire world forever… and who the fark would have chosen 1 apple in that case – if they knew the whole deal? They didn’t. Adults make bad choices – same as kids. What put the computer in our heads? God did. Who programmed it? God did.)
We keep on choosing evil every day and then lay it in front of God, saying that it is His fault that bad things happen. If he runs the show, he runs the show.
Just how stupid are we. Satan rules this world with his dark army, it still belongs to him So simply put, God did not setup this game, satan did, since he is the god of this world. So if you want a glimpse of hell, then just looks around you.
Again, we agree. This is hell. It is the epitome of hell.
Dont think for 1 minute that God will save you, if you dont want to be saved.
(Scare tactic noted. I never once, after the age of about 21 thought for 1 second about whether god would save me from something. I’m in it now – I’m floating around in this farking mess… has he saved me yet? Saved any kids from being raped during war lately? Nah. It’s a typical Christian response to use these threats to induce fear… Christians assume all of mankind is afraid of something they believe in… It’s such a silly response that I must smile when I hear this… it’s in every conversation you’ll witness between believer and non-believer though. You’ll see more later in the comment… )
Jesus will come back to rule on this earth and a great many people will experience this rule. It really does not matter what you think of God, He will do it anyway. God will not break his own laws. If you know God, which you obviously don’t, you will also know that satan is constantly accusing us, while Jesus is defending us. If God break His own laws to help us, well then satan has all the legal ground in the world, to stop all Gods plans for mankind.
Legal grounds? Legal grounds mean nothing – I assume in the big picture. Legal grounds are what society deals with – not what god or satan would consider – yes?
That is why Jesus was necessary and that is why He had to die on the cross, to give us a different path to God, because we cannot fulfill the law of God. Now at least we can use the law to show us our sins, and then go to the Son (Jesus) to clean us of that sin. The problem is that this world, the here and now is not the final destination as you would wish to see it. It is also painfully obvious to me that you do not know the power of God.
Ha! I don’t know what I don’t see. I do assume that something – either god or some amazing force, process, or alien made this world as it is. It’s complexity is phenomenal… and yet, I don’t see anyone stepping up onto the stage to take credit for it. I don’t mean stories – every religion has stories – Christians think theirs is the right one… as do Muslims, and the Church of Latter Day Saints. I could write a story too and make it sound really believable. In 100 years maybe there’s a Church of Fark with me as founder… There is no proof of the existence of a god except circumstantial. We all see the world. We don’t think we created it… so – naturally, as part of curiosity – a thirst for knowledge – we ask – who made this mess?
Neither do you understand that we are fighting a war on 2 fronts physical as well as spiritual. The problem is the spiritual part, since satan was very successful in convincing us that he does not exists. This helps in 2 ways. He took away the enemy of God and make god solely responsible for all the bad things in the world, while he can operate in stealth mode, creating all the terrible things and then make sure that God get accused for it.
The problem in all of this is that you are fine with the idea that satan is in charge of this world… now, how did a good god let that happen? As far as humans can guess there is an evil force in charge of this world. There’s no other rational explanation. We don’t know what good motives could possibly justify the fark going on here. Somehow you believe that this is a good part of god’s wonderful plan for those that believe in him – and screw everyone else. I can’t believe a good god has a plan for some of us and not for others – considering he made the infinite variety of people we are – he is the master programmer of all of this. Fairness would need to be a quality a ‘good god’ had.
An interesting part in all this is that if you think you are a Christian, you got to act also. So there is actually 2 parts to this, prayer is one part of the equation and acting the other. Looking at the bible, it seems to me that a lot of good men had been really busy. Just look at Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Peter and Paul, to name but a few. They did not sit on their backsides hoping for a miracle, they talked to God and then went out to do something to make the world a better place. So actually you figure right, what you do make one hack of a difference, now all you really need is to balance the 2 and understand that you are working for eternity in a very dangerous environment. I’m pretty sure that if you want immediate gratification for all the good you do, you may find that there is no God available for you. Not the God of the bible anyway. Now you need also to understand that it is not really about us, it is about God.
Not sure what you mean – what is about God? Our lives? the bible? I’m a bit lost on this part.
People that pray and that attribute great things to what they prayed are ignoring a lot of things.
Number one, they ignore the negatives that occur as being their own fault for a lack of faith in the god they’re praying to.
Number two, they’re ignoring the fact that probability happens this way and that way.
Number three, they’re ignoring the fact that whatever they might be praying for an on a test a positive result of a scan the offer on a house they want goes through. Pales in comparison to what 99% of troubles that others have in the world.
In America we pray for simple and selfish things that are so petty as to be laughable. We pray for a sunny day on our vacation so we can enjoy a day at the lake. Never mind that a rainy day would do more good growing crops than that sunny day ever could do we pray selfishly and pettily. How can someone actually believe that the thing that made this entire game gives half a care about your prayer about the day – if its sunny or not sunny? How could you even have the gall to bother the creator of the cosmos with a plea for an on your test? Are you insane? Are you so wrapped up in yourself and your idea of a personal jesus and god and savior that does things just for you because you ask for them? Why are you more important than the 6 billion other people on the planet? Don’t you understand that you need to ACT in order to change something?
What you are saying here is quite true. We are very wrapped up in ourselves. It is just about us, or for that matter me. Again the problem is that we do not know God or His power and therefore are doing the wrong things, and if we dont get any answers, accuse Him of all things bad. You have to pray according to the will of God and there are only 2 ways to really know the will of God. That is to spend time with God, read his word and learn it and secondly to get the Holy Spirit in your life so that He can clarify the words of the bible to you. We can be really thankful that we do have a merciful God.
I have no idea what you could possibly mean by a “merciful god”. I see no evidence of that.
He could have left us to drown in our own sin, but he is helping us even though we really dont know or appreciate it that much.
Yeah, I appreciate it – thanks a lot god, you jackass… And, we are drowning in our own sin… because we’re suffering for the sins of those thousands of years ago -yes? There is no way out during out lifetimes – only when we die – yes? So – drowning is appropriate as a symbol of what is happening here…
Trust me, you would not want God to be out of this world entirely.
(trust you? You have the monopoly on the truth I guess… This is another Christian tactic… they say things like this to imply that they are privy to some special information that they don’t want to reveal right now in words – but that if you just trust them, trust their character… you’ll someday know that same thing. You’ll someday have this undying, unfathomable faith in god as they know it. Ugghhh.)
And Yes! We pray for the wrong things, because we are selfish and egotistical.
As a result of how god created us. Thank you.
Dont you understand that this god that you believe in gave you much more power to change the probability to being in your favor by ACTING and DOING something – not praying? Did god ever come through with something? God is absent. God is a no-show for us now. Maybe in the past god was there -and listened and cared.
Now?
No.
God is an * for not caring and for not being available. How can something listen and listen to please from children to stop the pain of rape, disease, fathers abuse, blown off limbs, and infections of the eyes and do nothing? Please tell me what good god can do that? Please tell me some answer and not your typical blow off the question response, “god works in mysterious ways. Yeah, very mysterious so that they dont make sense to anybody on this earth and were supposed to believe in a good god?
I believe god is an *, through and through. I have told him daily for the past couple weeks. You know what? I’m still here saying it!
God is not HERE people.
God does not HEAR people.
God is, for all intents and purposes for
mankind, a non-issue.
God is dead.
This however is where you make a serious mistake. Im going to say this again. You dont want God to be absent
from this world at all. (Scare tactic noted…) You will see all these things multiply infinitely if God really leave us alone. (and again) Just through the basic goodness that we have in us, we already have a great deal of power to resist the things that you mention.
The basic GOODNESS we have in us? I’m not sure how you define goodness but to me, as Freud has pointed out – and the world must agree with – we are governed by two main forces… positive and negative stimuli. We move toward that which is pleasurable and that we want to repeat. We move away from, or try to decrease those experiences we perceive as negative… Guess what? It’s all according to US. Our selfishness is what rules us. We have others around us that can cause severe negative experiences – that is what moderates our selfish actions – not god that we can’t see. Selfishness is a negative that rules us. We are not basically good. We are basically selfish, self serving, self-seeking.
However, this leaves us with one big problem. That is the one we see at the moment. Christians became reactionists. We are only reacting to the things that happen, with now real power to try and prevent it. And whose fault is that? God?
I dont think so. We don’t want to learn about God, by studying His word.
What if we can have the power to stop bad things from happening? Will that impress you?
I’m not looking to be impressed. Being impressed won’t change my beliefs… however, something factual might.
Will that make you believe that God is still here?
Quite possibly, yes. God made people that believe in faith and those that need scientific facts… I’m not one to believe in faith, stories, or hearsay. I could, believe in something tangible… a god that came down and stood before me and told me what was up. He’d need to give me the rundown on what the whole plan is here. I can see Copperfield do tricks. I want the game explained in a rational way that makes sense to me and then I might believe in the plan. As it is – I’d spit in his face and gouge his eyes if I had the chance. Why? What is see is profoundly disgusting. Inexcusable. In my mind there is no possibility that even exists that could show the god that created all of this to be “good” in some overall way. It’s quite impossible because of what I know… of what I was given to interpret what I see with… these eyes, this brain. I’d welcome an explanation… but so far, it’s not forthcoming. You know what? I don’t expect one. I just expect to hate whatever created this from the depths of my being until I understand otherwise.
The unfortunate truth is that God has promised all of this to us already. In fact he even gave us the means to do this. The problem is that we don’t know about it and if we know about it, we are too afraid to either make it our own or use it against the dark forces. So we get kicked around, slapped from here to there and back again, and most of the time we don’t even know what is happening to us or why, and the devil and his demons have a royal time with us.
Most of the time we don’t know what is happening? All of the time. There is never one time we know… anything.
Well, it is time for good men to stand up for God and while working in the power of God show the world just who our God really is. I’m not joking about this, we need to understand that we do have great power in God. Trust me the fear of God will go through this land like a wildfire and the power of satan will pale in the presence of our lord Jesus Christ.
Ha! Here he combines the scare tactic WITH the trust me… It’s too much… really, just too much…
How do I know this, you may ask?
I’ve seen some if his healing power with my own eyes. That in itself was a wondrous experience.
Ahhh, that wondrous knowledge… that mystical knowledge that maybe we’ll all know someday… mmmmmmm, gives me a warm fuzzy… a hint of faith…
I also know that God will reveal much more of himself to us as we embark on the road to meet him. You don’t have to believe me, but you really owe it to yourself to at least learn more about this God that you so easily dismissed as dead and not caring. You are playing Russian roulette with your eternal soul that is not a good idea.
Yikes, there’s the ultimate scare tactic Christians use – I knew he’d pull that one out of the bag of tactics… my eternal soul is at risk here… you know what? So what. I don’t understand the game from that angle. I don’t see past what I see right here in front of me. I don’t see god except what I see idiot christians, muslims, jehovah’s witnesses, and others doing in their god’s name. I believe only what I see… only what I experience. That my friend, is one of the possibilities god created us with. In fact, he created those of other fervent religious backgrounds with that possibility too! To believe so strongly – (ignorantly, untestedly) in a god of their choosing that they’d evangelize, argue with, condemn, torture, crucify and kill others over. God made that as a possibility. That’s a rule of the game… he made the rules, he can’t be seen as good because we have some good things going on within the overall game. The overall game is sick, twisted, and heinous.
We’re set up to be losers here – all of us.
Understand, God never promised us a good easy life, in fact He just promise us the opposite, since we are living in the world of the enemy at the moment. The truth is, that being a Christian in the true sense of the word, is not for the faint hearted.
Yeah, you tough hearted christians are really knocking this game out… good luck to you and don’t forget to question what being a true christian is… there’s nothing more outrageous than christians that hole up with their little christian subgroups and do what’s comfortable and call it christianity… christ is the first 6 letters in christianity… if you do as he did – then maybe you’re approaching something resembling christianity…. I don’t know any christians that do as christ did… do you?
That will be the last of this type of post – I had to get one in there as it’s something I really enjoy. It gets at the crux of FarkedLife.com because I believe that really, we’re all farked in this game. There’s no winners. We don’t know the ‘why’ of the game – why are we playing? Who knows? We’re just all here playing this stupid game.
What for? Is there any point?
Who knows?
That’s the ridiculous thing – to live with all the shit going on – and not know why.
Guess the point of the game is to come up with your own reason WHY.
For me it’s simple.
Some really farked god, process, or force created all this – as an experiment. Like a computer game we’ve created now where we can control some of the variables a character in the game is capable of… something created this game with all that’s in it and all that we as players are capable of.
Some of us are more capable at some things than others.
Some can breathe better. Some have better hearts. Some have stronger legs. Some faster legs. Some better eyes. Some taller. Some whiter. Some bleed less, some more easily. Some are strong willed, others weak like the wind. Some of us are too heavy to do much. Some of us can work day and night with 3 hours sleep. Some of us were brought up with Muslim beliefs. Some of us with Hasidic Jewish beliefs. Some of us believe a man named Koresh holds the key to salvation.
Some of us in this game speak Swahili, others French. Some of us live in a place of abundance like Thailand. Others live in a desert in Africa. Some of us were born to parents on heroin. Others to parents on endorphines. Some of us had a grade school education, some none. Some of us were fellows at Harvard. Some of us push carts through a big city and beg cigarettes and change. Some of us have 2 arms and two legs, 10 fingers and toes, eyes that work and ears that work – and so many of us don’t. Some of us can jump really high. Some of us can only drag a lame foot, scraping across the pavement. Some of us were born as one… some conjoined with a twin. Some of us have good luck – our entire lives… we are part of the top 1% in the world as far as having good luck – our lives will always be like that – others in the bottom 20% are lucky not to come down with typhoid, malaria, dengue fever, AIDS and syphillus.
The people of the world are incredibly varied. So much so that to hold us as a group – humankind, to one standard – based on belief in any one illogical religion that we must believe in a certain way – is ludicrous. Absolutely unfathomable.
Ok, I’m done. Man I like this topic…
